Book of the Week: Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert

Why we love this book:

Children don’t like to eat vegetables right? But they love to dig in the dirt, gardening and learning through their five senses. Lois Ehlert’s vivid and bold pictures introduce a variety of vegetables and makes gardening simple and hands-on. One aspect of the book we especially like is the book starts with Dad growing the vegetable garden. Are you ready to grow a vegetable garden this summer? It’s not too late to get started. Tomorrow we’ll share how to create a square foot garden with your children. We also have a FREE printable book from our field trip to the farmers’ market.

Sensory Activity: After reading aloud Growing Vegetable Soup, brainstorm a list of vegetables with the children. As they share, write the words on a large chart. Invite the children to bring a vegetable to school to share with their classmates. Over the next few days, the children can explore the vegetable through their five senses.

Prompt the children with open ended questions. How does the vegetable look?  Children might describe color, size, shape, texture. They might compare it to another object. How does the vegetable feel? How does the vegetable smell?

You know your children best. If you think they can handle a cutting activity you can teach cutting safety as a small guided group activity.

Lastly, invite the children to a taste testing party. It’s amazing what children will try when they have been actively engaged in the process. How does the the vegetable taste?

And of course, you can always cook-up some vegetable soup!

I have grown to like tomatoes in the last 5 years or so. Somehow they make so many things taste better.

I also like alot of vegetables, especially home grown. My favorite is fresh tomatoes. My favorite vegetables to cook together in a pot are Okra, Tomatoes, Onions, Garlic, pepper, vinegar, and Tomato Sauce. I made myself hunger.

I L-O-V-E tomatoes from the garden. I wish the store bought were as good. I am thankful for a grandma who always has extras from her garden.
