The best farmer’s market I have ever been to is on the square in downtown Madison, Wisconsin. While visiting my sister-in-law in Chicago, she suggested a trip to the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the country. My husband countered with a suggestion, “Why don’t I drop you two off at the grocery store. You can stroll the produce aisles and I’ll wait for you in the car.” He was overruled and we drove to Madison. Wow, this farmers’ market is amazing. So amazing that the next time I went,  I actually got up at 6:00 AM to make the trip. Crazy, but true! The market is a feast for the eyes and the taste buds!

Well, our small town finally has a farmers’ market! Yeah! We load-up and take a little homeschool field trip every Saturday morning. If you have a farmers’ market in your town that starts on Friday, you might want to consider a trip with your preschool children. Your children will have an opportunity to experience some new sights and taste . . .

exotic looking oyster mushrooms . . .

colorful, spiky, cactus . . .

and sweet butter lettuce. This is the best lettuce ever. We buy it every week. I know shopping for produce might not sound like fun, but trust me, the farmers’ market is much more fun than the grocery store! We have a FREE printable book link for you at the end of this post.

We Went to the Farmers’ Market

We went to the farmers’ market. What did we buy?

We bought 3 big, red beets.

We went to the farmers’ market. What did we buy?

We bought 16 long, skinny carrots.

We went to the farmers’ market. What did we buy?

We bought 5 sweet, juicy oranges.

We went to the farmers’ market. What did we buy?

We bought 12 fresh, chicken eggs.

We went to the farmers’ market. What did we buy?

We bought 20 key limes for a pie.

(MacGyver volunteered to squeeze all of these for a famous key lime pie recipe I found in a magazine. Can you say “pucker-up”? That pie was um, tart! Can I borrow a cup of sugar?)

And I bought one giant lime green popsicle at the farmers’ market.
