Book of the Week: Spiders by Nic Bishop

Why we love this book:

First, Halloween is quickly approaching. But we’ve decided to skip the traditional arts and crafts Halloween projects and stick to our big theme study on animals and habitats around the world. We’re taking a look at all of the creepy, crawly animals associate with the Halloween season: spiders, bats, rats, black cats, snakes, lizards, toads, salamanders . . .

Back to our Book of the Week selection, Spiders by Nic Bishop. This book has amazing up-close and personal photos of spiders. Bring the children in for a close look of the photos and they’ll be mesmerized by their ability to actually count the hairs on a tarantula. Then there are all of those babies riding on the back of their mother. Yikes! The pictures alone are the perfect introduction to spiders for the littlest scientist; however, the information filled pages and glossary make it a true learning experience for elementary students.

Go ahead, don’t be a scaredy cat this Halloween; bring a little real-life creepy, crawly learning to the children in your life!

We’re GIVING away one copy of Spiders by Nic Bishop

Alice I’m with you. HATE rodents!!! Disgusting, gross, creatures! HATE them!

Brandy October 12, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Seriously, snakes have to be the worst thing ever. I detest them. For those of you that hate rodents, my daughter and I are reading a book called “The School Mouse” and it’s been good so far. The author also has an interesting way of writing that’s new to my six year old. You might (but probably not) see mice in a different way. On a separate note…my three year old son is obsessed with spiders right now because some neighbors down the road have a giant, and I mean giant, black widow put up for Halloween. It has started many conversations about spiders, many spider books have been checked out from the library, we’ve drawn pictures of spiders, googled them, watched you tube videos of spiders, and we’ve even found some outside. Just today he came running in from the backyard and said, “Mama, there are a million tarantulas in the playhouse!” It was really just a whole gang of granddaddy long legs (which is part of the arachnid family but not actually a spider…but try telling that to a 3 year old!) So cute! Anyway, I didn’t know this book existed and will look for it if I don’t win it.
