Book of the Week GIVEAWAY: I Like Me by Nancy Carlson
Why we love this book:
We’ve been starting the school year with I Like Me for twenty years. This joyful main character proclaims, “I like my curly tail, my round tummy and my tiny little feet.” So yes this book serves up a healthy dose of self-esteem. But more importantly, it simply teaches life lessons about making mistakes and treating one’s self with respect. It’s amazing how a powerful message can be packed into a simple little story. Read this one to ALL of your children!
Reading I Like Me easily sets the stage for important conversations about self-esteem:
What do you like to do?
How can you take care of yourself and your body?
What do you like about yourself?
How do you cheer yourself up?
What should you do when you make a mistake?
Self Portraits by Children
Read Aloud Books:
- I Like Me: Simple but engaging text perfect for young children.
- We Are All Alike We Are All Different: We like the real photos of real children in this book written by a kindergarten class.
- The Mixed-Up Chameleon: Excellent for highlighting how we are all different but each of us are made perfectly with different talents.
Self Portraits
- Give the children an opportunity to observe themselves in the mirror, noting the color and shape of their hair, eyes and skin. Encourage them to use describing words while observing themselves, “long, short, curly, straight, round, oval . . .”
- Give the children a blank piece of paper to draw a picture of themselves. They can simply draw their face or draw themselves doing something they like.
- This will take some children 30 seconds and others 20 minutes. They’re all different!
- Children are invited to add writing to their portraits if they’d like.
Color Me Beautiful!
Oh Happy Day! Sunshine, pink shoes and earrings. What more does a girl need?
Standing tall and proud!
Everything’s coming-up roses.
I like me and I love my family!
Each year, this is the first piece of work that Ms. Trisha puts in each child’s portfolio. At the end of the year, she repeats this self portrait activity and the parents can observe the progression in their child’s creativity, drawing, letter formation and letter/sound recognition development.

Homeschool Adaptation
- Each year have your children draw a self portrait. These self portraits can be bound together in a scrapbook, illustrating the changes in your child from year to year. What a special keepsake! You might just need to grab a tissue when you look at it. I can’t imagine looking at the above self portrait when Miss Enigma is off to college someday. More tissues please! -jeannine

Love this book! It is fun to draw a self portrait every month from August- May and then bind them in a book for Mother’s Day. So, to answer one of your questions….I cheer myself up with a little square of Dove dark chocolate and raspberry swirl and a little glass of Pinot.
I like to wake up before the kids get up have a cup of coffee or two and read a book or look over our school work for the morning.
I like to be in the garden surrounded by nature.. it inspires me to think, it gives me great ideas, and when I am down or concerned it helps me find peace.
I like my quiet time in the morning…I try to always get up before the boys to read my Bible, pray, and drink my coffee! It’s the perfect start to a day and sure is missed when I wake up late!
What do you like to do?
I love to read! Both silently to myself and out loud to my family.
How can you take care of yourself and your body?
Eat right, exercise, drink plenty of water, and reduce stress, as much as possible.
What do you like about yourself?
I’m nurturing and a good listener.
How do you cheer yourself up?
Ask for a hug from a loved one!
What should you do when you make a mistake?
Apologize and try to make amends!
Great list of books. What I like about myself is that I have a sense of humor and that I can integrate information quickly and pick up most important parts. Good for my job
We will be looking for some books you recommended – thanks for joining WMCIR!
