Number Recognition for Preschoolers

Last Christmas, Santa gave Miss Enigma this fabulous clock made by Melissa & Doug. For some reason Santa always gives our children educational toys. Ummm, I wonder why? Santa must be passionate about education.

Miss Enigma, age 4, is not ready for “telling time” but this clock is wonderfully diverse! She already knows the names of most of the shapes and currently she is using it to develop her number recognition.

It’s just my opinion, but I think number recognition is not worth much if it is not combined with number concept development. Miss Enigma has been able to count items one-to-one since she was two. However, she still doesn’t recognize all of her numbers. I much rather her be able to apply her number skills than her just be able to “recognize and say” her numbers.

On this day, she used her clock numbers and a set of shells from the beach to apply both her number recognition and number counting skills.

One by one she added her number blocks to her tray. (I bought this inexpensive bead container at a local hobby store. You can also use a muffin tin.) As she added her numbers she would count up from number one.

With each new number block she added to the tray, she counted out the corresponding number of shells.

Miss Enigma does many variations on this simple game.

Adaptations:

sorting tray: bead tray, muffin tin, Texas (or jumbo) size muffin tin, egg carton, bowls, cups . . .

counting items: beads, rocks, shells, beans, keys, tiles, mini-animals, blocks, lids . . .

preschool thematic units: When Joyce teaches in thematic units, she sets-up a number recognition & number counting station that corresponds to her theme.

  • beach = shells (large to avoid choking)
  • farm = plastic animals
  • gardening = seeds

I’m a bit challenged when it comes to making up games and things to do to learn…which is one reason I like y’all’s site so much! We do use counting with everyday things though from crackers to freckles, I try to have the boys learn to count everything! :)

I love the book My Rows and Piles of Coins. It’s not exactly a counting book, but it’s about a little boy in East Africa who counts a lot becaus he’s saving up his money for a bicycle!

I just found your site! We are just delving into the world of home kindergarten for my 5 year old and pre-school for my 3 year old. Thank you for all these wonderful ideas! We don’t really have anything quite set up yet for number counting/recognition other than the usual counting things, working in workbooks, etc. but I would like to try your ideas! Thanks!

I like Ten Black Dots. I read the story then give the children 10 black dots and a blank sheet of paper to see what they can come up with.

Your activity with the box of compartments is very much like the Montessori Spindle box.

I got that shape sorting clock for my youngest last Christmas! My 20 month old and 3 year old love it. I will have to use the numbers to help my 3 year old with her one-to-one counting

Hey!
Love the flexablity! But since we are working on numbers I thought I would add that this week our letter was E so we counted Elephants. I made several Elephants laminted them and we used them in counting, songs, and anything I could think of to help my son learn more! It was fun!
