Wag a Tail by Lois Ehlert

Book of the Week GIVEAWAY: Wag A Tail by Lois Ehlert

Why we love this book:

Collage city dogs with bright button eyes, spend the day at the Farmers Market with their owners for a “Wig Wag Zig Zag” time of fun. When I read a Lois Ehlert book, I’m inspired to grab a pair of pinking shears and start snipping away! Throw in a bottle of glue, a handful of buttons and a pile of paper and fabric scraps and we are in artistic business.

Wag a Tail by Lois Ehlert

Earlier in the year, Ms. Trisha and her preschoolers were busy delving into the wonderful world of pets. We knew these ideas were just too cute to pass up. And when it comes to pets, what’s better than a book full of tail wagging inspiration?

I Like My Dog Cut Apart Sentence Puzzles

One again, I’m impressed by how Ms. Trisha can do the one activity with an entire group of preschool children and each child is able to make a totally unique creation! Too often in preschool the goal is too make a “product” that looks just like the teacher’s. Not in Ms. Trisha’s class!

Supplies

  • one white rectangle and two ears for each child
  • markers
  • simple printed sentences
    • I like my dog.
    • My dog can run.
    • Look! I see my dog.
    • I can see my dog run.

Pets Theme Study Activities

  • Each of the preschoolers were given a big white rectangle and two ears.
  • Some dogs were yellow. Some rectangles went sideways. Some ears went up.

Pets Theme Study Activities

  • Other dogs were black and brown. And other ears went down.

Pets Theme Study Activities

  • Some rectangles even went up and down with a big doggie grin!

Cut Apart Sentence Puzzles

  • The children were given simple cut apart sentences.
  • They could cut the sentences up and put the words together to create new sentences.

Collage Shape Cats

  • If you look closely, you can see that once again the cats are all uniquely different.

Sing-along Time

Pets Theme Study Activities

Shared Writing: Keeping with our pet theme we have a little song adaptation for you to the tune of I Love the Mountains. After sharing your favorite pet books with the children, let the children brainstorm a list of pets. As the children share, write their pet ideas on a large chart tablet. The next day, as a shared writing experience, invite the children to join you in writing a class song “I Love My Pets” or “We Love Our Pets.” Write their new lyrics on a large chart. Your adaptation might go a little something like the one below.

I Love My Pets

(Sung to the tune of I Love the Mountains)

I love my kitty.

I love my puppy.

I love my hamster.

I love my gold fish.

I love my pets

And they love me

Boom-dee-ah-dah, Boom-dee-ah-dah, I love my pets.

Boom-dee-ah-dah, Boom-dee-ah-dah, I love my pets.

I love my fish.

Shared Reading: The simple lyrics to “I Love My Pets” can be assembled into a class book. Each child can illustrate a picture of a pet. These song adaptation books are a meaningful way to build a class library of easy familiar reading for the children.

  • A simple sentence strip can be printed with the sentence “I love my fish.”
  • The sentence strip can be glued directly onto the illustration -or-
  • As with the cut apart sentence above, the sentence “I love my fish.” can be cut apart and glued back together onto the illustration like a puzzle.

We have a wonderfully soft tortoiseshell cat. I hope we can add a dog to our family sometime soon.

We have 2 dogs – a poodle-mix, who is great with our preschooler, and a chihuahua, who doesn’t like kids! We use the chihuahua’s nervousness to teach our 4-year-old how to behave around pets (move slowly, speak softly) and how to read their body language.
