Last fall, during our vacation on Okaloosa Island, just a few minutes west of Destin, we were treated to a stormy day of rain.
Oddly enough, thunderstorms are one of my favorite things at the beach! Look at those blue-green, grayish hues! (Ummm . . . funny, just realized these colors look similar to the ones I chose for my bedroom. I wonder why? I’ve got serious beach issues!)
Seaside Day Trip
We decided we would use the day to do a bit of sight-seeing. We ended-up taking a 30 minute drive east of Destin to the picturesque town of Seaside, Florida.
Even on a stormy day, the Seaside beach views were amazing.
No Coconut Lined Beaches . . . Just Pine Trees
What I found uniquely appealing about the area around Seaside is the way the piney woods line the slopes of the beach. Right over this lake surrounded by pine trees and swaying grass is the slope down to the beach. It’s simply gorgeous.
Peace . . .
Inland, you find trails that lead you through tall pine forest and around peaceful lakes.
Probably over 20 years ago, I first saw the idyllic town of Seaside featured on an episode of This Old House. Way back then, I was ready to pick-up and move sight unseen. The nostalgic planned beach community was so quaint and cute . . . and it was located on Florida’s Emerald Coast! Need I say more? If I do, you don’t know me very well.
In 1996, Seaside was chosen as the primary location for the filming of Jim Carrey’s blockbuster, The Truman Show. I can see why. The little town looks like a movie set. Only, people actually live and vacation on this real life movie set.
Shopping in Seaside
The town square is reminiscent of small town America in the 1940’s when you could walk to everything you needed. It was nice to get away from all of the “beach trash” stores that you typically find in beach towns and linger in the Seaside shops featuring unique art, home furnishings, clothes, books and toys.
We mostly did a lot of window shopping but my kiddos found a new favorite beach store . . . Seaside Kids. This is where they were introduced to Cubebot and Ogobild. Both toys are great choices for traveling with kids! Hint, hint grab some before your next trip.
The rainy day made it hard for me to capture the sweetly, nostalgic beach cottages. This photo looks down one side of main street. Other cottages are nestled among the pine trees on quite back streets.
You can take a peek in some of these cute little (and many not so little) beach cottages at vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner). You might even find one for your next beach getaway! Looking for an Affordable and Kid Friendly Beach Vacation?
