Beach Bargain DIY Budget Kitchen Refresh from Island Princess 215

Are you watching the HGTV Beach Flip Series? This week, I’m continuing to play along with our own beach bargain renovation.

Boat Cleat Cabinet Pulls from HGTV Beach Flip

Last Sunday, the Beach Flip couples ripped out their kitchens and did complete remodels. There were little bits and pieces I loved from each kitchen update (Especially the boat cleats as cabinet knobs. Working a DIY boat cleat towel rack into my beach condo soon!) and then there were the things I did not love so much (the giant poster mural).

So it’s off to Okaloosa Island, Florida and our before and after kitchen photos. Again, I’m not a professional photographer. These are personal shots from our DIY beach kitchen refresh.

DIY Kitchen Refresh on a Budget

Kitchen / Dinning Before Photo

  • It’s all about the view!
  • Décor can be updated . . . the view is here to stay!

Kitchen Before Photo

  • First rule of a budget renovation: Stick to ypur budget!
  • Second rule of a budget renovation: What can I keep?
  • Kitchen cabinets, countertop and appliances were all white.
  • An all white kitchen is perfect for a beach cottage look. I’ll keep it all!
  • This is a simple update, not a total tear-out (which we’ve done in the past). Yeah!
  • So happy hubby didn’t snap a photo of me installing the new tile backsplash. I had to throw in a few Cirque du Soleil moves to pull off that backsplash!

 Kitchen / Dinning After Photo

  • Let’s start with the most important feature . . . the ocean view at sunrise!
  • Can you believe I get to make my morning coffee looking at that view?!
  • This photo was taken during our whirlwind DIY beach reno week. Since then, we upgraded the curtains and now the crisp sailboat white curtains open up to reveal even more of the view!
  • Coffee at sunrise is one of my favorite times of the day at the beach!

Kitchen / Dinning After Photo

  • The style of our beach condo update is Modern Beach Cottage.
  • My goal was comfy and cozy, yet light, airy, crisp and clean.
  • This week, I’ll focus more on the simple touches we added to the kitchen.
  • Next week, I’ll share shopping information on the dining room updates.

Kitchen / Dinning After Photo

  • One of the things I really like about the condo is the open concept and big kitchen counter for cooking.
  • Thrilled we didn’t need to tear out cabinets or walls!

Kitchen After Photo

  • While at the beach, I cook fresh seafood almost every night. I like having plenty of space to prepare our meals. I enjoy being part of the family not tucked away in some horrible, dark, little condo kitchen. And have I mentioned . . . I love the view! Just in case I haven’t . . . I L-O-V-E the view!

Kitchen After Photo

  • You might be wondering . . . where are all of the cute little beach knick-knacks?
  • We share our beach home with other families as a vacation rental. Accordingly, our vacation home is decorated with less high maintenance type items. Each week, housekeeping cleans, cleans, cleans getting the home ready for the next family. I don’t want to accumulate too many dust catchers for them to clean each week.
  • However, we do have an antique ICE COLD Watermelon sign. My family thought I was nuts when I brought that old sign home. Too bad, I adore it. Besides what says Welcome to the South . . . Welcome to Summer  . . . more than ice cold watermelon!

Kitchen Update Shopping Guide ($1000 Budget)

  • What a picture of bacon jalapeño shrimp with ginger glaze? If you know me, you will understand the shrimp picture!
  • I like to cook, hence some of our budget went towards updating all of the dinnerware, flatware and a fully stocked kitchen with everyday cooking equipment.
  • And for all of the guests who enjoy cooking as much as I do, a brand new GE Range is on the way!
  • Sticking with my modern beach cottage style, I selected all white dinnerware.

Kitchen Cabinet Update

  • Would I like new cabinets? Of course I would. Do I need new cabinets. Not really!
  • I wanted to decorate tasteful beach rather than tacky tropical.
  • I found the Nautilus Shell Cabinet Hardware Knob Seaside Cottage on Amazon.
  • Such a bargain at $2.47 per knob!
  • The knobs where a bit more off-white than what I wanted. I gave them a light spray with Valspar White Lacquer. They turned out perfect.
  • Totally updated the cabinets for about $50.00.
  • I purchased different knob styles for each bathroom & bedroom.

China Blend from CoolTiles.com

Kitchen Update Backsplash

  • China Blend from CoolTiles.com
  • This photo is what sold me on the China Blend tile backsplash. It is very subtle and has just a slight sheen.
  • I highly recommend CoolTiles.com. I’ve purchased from them for several different DIY home projects.
  •  I ordered a number of different tile samples, some with more color, took them to the condo and selected which one fit best with the overall style.

Kitchen Update DIY Canvas Art

  • We created a number of our own canvas type art projects.
  • This was a photo my husband snapped with his phone at a local pier.
  • We liked the geometric look and the abstract looking splashes of water so a random phone picture became a one of a kind piece of artwork.

 Breakfast with a View

  • Let’s face it . . . this is the best part of the kitchen.
  • In the mornings, we grab our coffee and watch the dolphins play in the surf.

Beautiful work! I’m watching Beach Flip too. Could not understand why the ladies that won won. They did not have the island set so you could enjoy the view when you’re cooking and then the lack of walking space, what??

I’m with you, I did not like that mural but I did like the turquoise back splash (if they had installed it better) that couple put in.

I really loved the marble counter tops that two couples used, perfect for a beach home without being to the I’m going to puke seashells stage that some beach homes look like. Subtle is perfect because it evokes the same calm and relaxed feeling that I for one feel when I’m at the beach.

Beautifully decorated Jeannine!

Elizabeth I too really loved that marble counter tops! The creamy, sandy colors were gorgeous. People often put in black granite when updating their beach condos. The heavy black never looks very beachy, especially when paired with dark cabinets.

That turquoise tile was gorgeous. I looked at more colorful tile but decided that it was just too much with our new sea salt wall color. And I am totally in love with that peaceful sea salt color! Feels like I’m already relaxing in the ocean without blinding me with bright turquoise.

Let’s see what Beach Flip has in store next week . . .
