Book of the Week GIVEAWAY: The Animals’ Christmas Carol by Helen Ward
Why we love this book:
This nativity picture book’s gorgeous ink-and-water color pictures and rhyming verse are inspired by a French Christmas carol with roots in the 12th or 13th century. The book presents the animals view point of the birth of Christ in the manger,
“As the newborn child in the manger slept
The creatures all around him crept,
And though he woke he did not cry
As they sang their gentle lullaby . . .”
The language of the gentle lullaby and the detailed pictures are equally beautiful.
And I guess, I have a special affection for this carol since I sang it in my first grade Christmas program. To this day I LOVE this song. Too bad my parents didn’t have “video” in those days because it took me forever to find a kid’s version of this carol!
At the end of the post is a link to the carol, “The Friendly Beast,” if you’d like to hear the tune of the song featured in The Animals’ Christmas Carol. Please share if you have a wonderful version of this carol.

This carol is new to me! Is the tune printed in the book?
I think if I had to choose one all-time favorite, it would have to be “Silent Night”, along with the story behind it – and all the more because I spent four years living in Austria, where it was written.
Yes, the last page actually includes the sheet music for the song.
My favorite is Hark the Herald Angels Sing… I would love to check out this book. Always looking for new material.
My favorite is “Silent Night.” I also love “Away in a Manger.” Such a wonderful time when God sent His only Son to be on earth for us!
This book seems really neat!
Hi! Hopping over from the Hip Homeschool Hop!
My favorite Christmas carol is “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” and particularly the Casting Crowns rendition of it.
We just bought the Cedermont Kids Christmas Carols CD. It has THe Friendly Beasts on it. That is Logan’s favorite Christmas song now. The crazy thing is, I had never heard that song before this Christmas. I grew up with a mom who was a church pianist so it’s suprising when I don’t know a religious christmas song! I hope I win!! But if not, I’m still going to have to buy a copy of this book for my boy!
My favorite Christmas carol is Deck The Halls! I also love Silent Night! There are so many beautiful carols, I just wish I had a voice to match. I always have to be the one to sing softly so as not to “mess” it up! Ha!
I just love the Chipmunk Christmas CD.
