Book of the Week GIVEAWAY: The Night Before Christmas
Performed by Peter, Paul and Mary
Written by Clement C. Moore
Paintings by Eric Puybaret
Why we love this book:
There is one word for this book, ENCHANTING! Where do I start? The classic poem? The magical illustrations? Or the absolutely, lovely performance by Peter, Paul and Mary?
Growing-up as a child, our family had a Little Golden Book version of The Night Before Christmas. I can close my eyes and still see the illustration of, Mama in her kerchief, and Papa in his cap as he sprang from his bed to see what was the matter. This classic poem is one that should be read to all children every Christmas.
While browsing through children’s books, the illustrations on the cover of this book caught my attention. As I thumbed through the pages, I found the illustrations bright and warm and they just seem to twinkle right off the page. The book has a very nostalgic look to it and St. Nicholas reminds me of our traditional German St. Nicholas. I just couldn’t leave the store without this book!
When I got home, I popped in the CD and was mesmerized like a little child. I loooooove this book and CD! The recording was made by Peter, Paul and Mary. This was Mary Travers last recording and her reading of this classic poem is simply enchanting! The back of the book tells the story of Mary recording the reading of The Night Before Christmas, “She whispered, as if telling the child a secret . . . . When she finished, we were breathless . . . .” They did two takes, but the first one was the one.
On December 6th, our German St. Nicholas will make a stop at our house and there beside the children’s stockings will be a copy of The Night Before Christmas! I am giddy with the anticipation of cuddling with the kiddos as Mary reads to us.
This is the one Christmas Book EVERY Child Should Receive This Christmas!

I’ll just say hey because how could I chose a favorite amongst all the wonderful Christmas books. It’d be like picking a favorite child.
My favorite Christmas book is The Amazing Christmas Extravaganza by David Shannon.
Just a hey from me too, There are a lot of good Christmas books, when I was little I liked the Little Match Girl. I can not wait to check out this book. I saw Peter and Paul on stage in Kerrville at a music festival, they were awesome.
I can’t decide on a favorite. We love so many Christmas books. I guess my favorite would have to be the Christmas story in the Bible. We can’t read that one enough times this time of year.

I’m late replying for the contest but wanted to mention “Christmas is Here” by Lauren Castillo. It’s currently my favorite children’s book version of the account of the birth of Christ. Fabulous illustrations that go along with the KJV Bible text.
What a hard question…I guess I will go with “The Mitten” by Jan Brett. I love her illustrations, everytime we read it we find something new. I also have to give “The Night Before Christmas” an honorable mention.
