Book of the Week GIVEAWAY: Swimmy by Leo Lionni

Why we love this book:

Can you believe it? Summer is just around the corner! We’re looking forward to the sun, sand and water with much anticipation! There’s just none better than Swimmy to take us on a tour through the deep wet world of the ocean. This Caldecott Honor Book is best known for it’s story of the little fish that uses his ingenuity to teach his new companions how to work together to camouflage themselves from the fierce tunas. An important lesson that combines the message of being yourself and also working together to solve a problem.

The language and illustrations in Swimmy are exquisite. Where else can you find a watery print world with “a forest of seaweeds growing from sugar-candy rocks . . . and sea anemones, who looked like pink palm trees swaying in the wind.”

I’m accustomed to seeing classes of children make a giant wall mural of little red fish with Swimmy standing alone as the eye. As an alternative, I like giving children many materials to explore, paint and stamp, creating their own watery world. Taking descriptive writing tips from Leo Lionni, older children can write their own descriptive sentences for their ocean illustrations.

I am so ready for a trip to Florida, my first visit to the beach there and then a trip to Corpus Christi later on in the summer. Bring it!!!

We aren’t going to sand surf or sun this summer, but it sounds good :)

I am definitely ready for a beach trip. We used to live right near the beach, but moved back to where we are now to be close to our families. We haven’t been to the beach since we moved back (5 years ago!) and I just mentioned to my husband that it was time to take the kids to the beach. We are looking for a very quiet (almost deserted would be best) and inexpensive place to go. I can’t wait to read your next post!

Absolutely… and headed to the beach next week!!! It will be our last vacation before our new baby is born in July!

Came here by way of ABC and 123 Show and Tell. My post is here: http://likemamalikedaughter.blogspot.com/2012/05/enchanted-childhood-playschool-may-7th.html

I LOVE the summer – but definitely prefer early and late summer – although that middle part of July and August is good for night time walks on the beach!

I’m definitely ready for a vacation! But we haven’t made our summer plans yet. I don’t know if we’ll get to see the ocean this year, but we’ll definitely enjoy the beautiful lakes in our area. Unfortunately, summer often comes with uncomfortable humidity where we live but we can escape to cooler places (or jump in a lake), if we need to!

Definitely ready for summer! We are planning a vacation to the beach before our second daughter is born- and I cannot wait to be playing in the waves with my little girl!

We’re ready for summer! We probably won’t be taking a regular vacation this year, but we’ll come up with plenty of fun things to do at home!

Wendy Clark May 17, 2012 at 7:06 pm

So ready for summer and a little break from school. I don’t think we will be heading to the beach this summer, but I am ready for a good break.

I’m working on revamping my “book adventures” page at Ready. Set. Read! Would it be ok if I put a link to your free printable book, “I’m ready for the beach” in my early reader section of beach books? I love all of your beach ideas, btw!

Jeannine May 30, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Sure! Our mission at waddlee-ah-chaa is to get books into the hands of parents, teachers and children. Share away! Just link to the original post with the FREE printable book. We have two or three FREE printable beach books and song adaptions. Have fun exploring the beach and ocean sea creatures.
