Budget Friendly Family Beach Vacation: Okaloosa Island, Florida

Welcome to Okaloosa Island, Florida!

Okaloosa Island is located about 6 miles west of Destin, Florida. Same gorgeous, crystal-clear, blue-green water and fluffy white sand. None of the crowds and over-stimulation. If you are one that wants to go and see and do . . . Destin is just a short drive. But what a difference that short drive makes.

As for us, when we are at the beach, we like to spend our days at the beach playing in the sand and the surf! The ocean offers a world of exploration, adventure and fun. And it’s FREE, FREE, FREE.

Our one “splurge” is the rental of a kayak. On a day when the water is nice and calm, Daddy rents a kayak and shuttles the children around the ocean. One afternoon, MacGyver and Daddy even got the opportunity to chase a pod of dolphins.

Dolphins are common along the Florida Gulf Coast. We see them each and every day. The thrill never gets old.

The boogie boards always hit the surf on days when the waves are bigger.

On the other hand, days when the water is as smooth as glass are good days for floating a little boat made from driftwood and items found on the beach.

But for MacGyver, the highlight of every trip to the beach are the sea creatures! Each day he heads down to the beach with his buckets and fishing nets and sets-up shop. Let the exploration and adventures begin!

Our little Jeff Corwin catches creatures of all shapes and sizes and proceeds to entertain all of the men, women and children on the beach.  He just loves it when the other mother’s squeal as he shows off his prizes and his bravery. Before the day is over, everyone along the beach knows MacGyver. He is truly fearless!

* No animals were harmed in the filming of these sea creature photos. It is strictly catch and release around here!

One afternoon, the kiddos began catching little hermit crabs by the bucket full.

Another day, MacGyver and Mommy scooped-up a small clump of seaweed floating in the ocean. This little clump of seaweed turned out to be the most amazing little ecosystem full of iddy-biddy hermit crabs, baby fish, shrimp, more tiny crabs almost no bigger than a speck and the always fascinating pipefish.

Pipefish are like long seahorses and safe to gently handle. They are so cool!

Yes, that’s a tiny, little shrimp.

MacGyver found these flat silver fish following the jellyfish. If you look closely you can see other little fish. They almost looked like small pufferfish.

What more could a wanna-be Jeff Corwin ask for? These photos are just the beginning to his sea creature adventures.

While the kiddos keep themselves busy with sea creature adventures, I like to sit back with a book and enjoy the sound of the waves and the breathtaking scenery.

Many of our evenings end with the guys fishing. This time of day is so beautiful and peaceful.

Every night ends with a family walk on the beach, watching the sunset.

And if the kiddos have their way, there’s always a stop at the pool for one last night swim. With views like this, it’s not too hard to twist my arm.

And just when I think it is safe to crash in the condo all coomfy in my pajamas, it’s time for night crabbing. Always a favorite with the children.

So are you ready to pack your bags?
